Hail the Lego King

One of Ollie's Christmas presents was a box of Lego's. The lego fest usually starts with Ollie dumping the entire box on the floor. We build something, then Ollie tears it down. On occasion he'll try to put blocks together, but he can't because he has them facing the wrong direction. After a little help, he builds a few up, then tears them apart. Demolition is always more fun than building. In honor of his highness, we now proclaim him...

Tired But Better

Ollie had problems sleeping last night from about 1 - 3. We tried bringing him into our bed, but he was just playing. So, he went back to his own bed. He howled like we had hurt him. He fell asleep for a little while then about 2, he woke up again. I took him to the couch to try and get him to sleep in there. We kicked Zoey out of her bed to lay down. He played with the blanket, then his feet, then he went back to his own bed to howl again. Finally, some time around 3 he howled again. I just moved him around in the bed and let him how until he fell back asleep. He slept all the way through what was left of the night.

This morning he woke up groggy, but not as crabby as he had been. He also didn't have mucus in his eyes. It appears we've avoided a doctors visit. I'm hoping that his teeth pushed through and that is what was causing his discomfort. We can't check of course, unless we want to be missing digits.

As his Mom said this morning, it is good preparation for the sleeplessness we will have with the new baby in June.

Relaxing

Ollie never sits in our laps for long periods of time. We know when he does that he is tired. This has happened the last 2 nights about 7:30. So he went to bed early. He has slept through both nights, but has been talking up a storm in his sleep. Every few hours he would say something in his sleep. Unfortunately for us it wakes us up, thinking he needs something. If he doesn't cry we know he's fine and will go back to sleep. It just makes us a bit groggy in the morning.

There are times he will relax for a few minutes in one position. Usually it is with a snack.

Hopefully the older he gets the more relaxing he will do. Maybe we won't have to chase him down so often, but I doubt it.

Normal

Normality has returned for Ollie. No bloody nose, just the extra mucus from his cold is still hanging around. His fighting of wiping his face is still present, even though he is trying to pull the mucus off his eyelashes. He fights tooth and nail to prevent a parental unit from cleaning mucus off him.

He's been going to bed earlier because of the cold and he is getting up in a little better mood. He still wants to be held an inordinate amount of time. This morning he stomped some of his Trix. So the bad moods and a bit of crabbiness are still present. He is back to his normal playing habits.

I think we've broken him of the table dancing. He still tries to get on top of everything and thinks it is the funniest thing in the world when he does. He knows he's doing something he shouldn't be and that produces a maniacal laugh from him. He doesn't think it is so funny when he gets his butt whipped for it. He'll keep testing us in different ways for the rest of our lives and we'll keep putting our foot down when necessary. Someday he'll get it and stop testing us, but that day isn't coming any time soon.

The Nose

With all of Ollie's sickness as of late, his nose hasn't stopped running in awhile. It doesn't help that he still likes to play with his nose and make the snot come out. At least it is occasionally easier to clean him up. It gets really nasty when he does this:

This morning however he woke up with a bloody nose because the air is so dry. Tresa and I have had them the past couple of days, so it wasn't surprising when he had one. He had a spot on his sheets from the blood and his nose was caked in dried blood. Needless to say he wasn't cooperating with us to get it all off. He had a nasty clot stuck in one nostril and Tresa cleared it out. We got it fairly well cleaned out by the time we left for work and the sitters. His nose is still draining and their was dried blood in it, so I'm sure his sitter will be cleaning it all day long. I can't wait until his cold is over, his molars are in and summer comes. It is not too much fun to fight someone to wipe their nose.

Molars, Cold, Constipation and Presents!

As our last Christmas was had, Ollie had easily tripled his present total to somewhere around 30 presents. Ollie's Grandma Vickie came in to town with toys for the little boy. Ollie opened them up, we took them out of the boxes and put them together and Ollie played with them all. Just like the other Christmas' Ollie was distracted by each new toy that he opened. He like them all.

Saturday his cold became worse. His 2 year molars made the situation worse for his sinuses. He woke up from his nap with his right eye matted in snot. Both eyes had mucus drainage for the rest of the day. Ollie was also very clingy due to the molars coming in and being a pain in the mouth. He wanted us to carry him every where. Needless to say, he wasn't happy when we set him down to do things with 2 hands. He threw fits most of the afternoon because of not being carried. He's a heavy boy. If you need a workout, just carry a 30 lb. toddler around all day, great for arms, not so great for your back.

We setup the vaporizer on Saturday night and his face appeared much better Sunday morning. We thought he might have pinkeye when he got up on Saturday, but any redness around the eye was gone Sunday morning. He did have a little bit of mucus around his eyes, but not much. However, he was worse on the clingy scale on Sunday. Nothing would make him happy other than being held all day. He ate a good Chinese lunch (Chinese buffet, he had macaroni and other American dishes) and took a nap when we got home. He awoke with Mr. Clingy in tow. Then he proceeded to throw fits all night because we wouldn't carry him around the house. He also was grabbing his butt and obviously in pain. Constipation! He had eaten cheese a couple of times over the weekend and now he was paying for it. We tricked him into drinking juice, but nothing yet. Eventually, he wore himself out from all the fit throwing and was in bed by 8:30.

Our night was just beginning. He awoke around midnight because his teeth were hurting. He got more medicine and we attempted let him sleep with us. He didn't want to lay back down, so I tried to put him on my chest. Instead, Ollie kept pinching my skin like it would come off of me! After failing to get him to lay down I took him back to his room and tried to get him to fall asleep on my shoulder. As soon as I tried to move him off my shoulder, he screamed. So, he cried himself back to sleep in about 15 minutes. This morning he was tired (we all were) and he was still fairly clingy. His cold looks to have gotten better and he off at the sitters. Hopefully, the other kids will distract him from being clingy so the sitter won't have to carry him all day.

Mr. Clingy

There is always a point in the evening when your child has been the most rotten of the lot, but they are sick, in pain and tired. They just sit in your arms and want you to take care of them and they are content for awhile. Moments like those, make the rest all worth it.

Crabby Teething Boy

The molars are still working their way in. Ollie has been extremely crabby the past 2 days. Yesterday morning he was really crabby and nothing made him happy. He had diarrhea during the day and got medicine. He was much better once he got Motrin before his bath. He was back to his normal self last night. He went to bed at 8 without a fuss. He also took a 'little person' play toy with him to bed the last 2 nights. We don't know why he is so attached to that one, but it sleeps with him.

This morning he was still crabby, but not as much. He didn't want anything, but his chocolate milk. Needless to say, he didn't get any breakfast. He was still needy and grabby. Ollie wanted to be carried all the time. With a 28 lb. toddler, he gets heavy fast. He may be bigger than that now, but it has been awhile since we've been to the doctors. He doesn't have another appointment until his 2nd b-day. If we are lucky, we won't have to visit them before then. He's a very healthy boy, but you never know.

I'm just hoping the molars come through quickly and less painfully than they have been. Then in a few years, they all will get pulled out. I don't remember the new ones being painful, but I don't remember much from that time either, maybe I just blocked it out.

He Hates

He hates things, like his winter hat being put on his head. His gloves on his hands and his new shoes. His jacket has been upgraded to the 'dislike with a passion' phase. Ollie got new tennis shoes last night because he had out grown his last pair. He didn't want to try them on, he didn't want to wear them this morning. At least he sat through breakfast with them on without a fit. Of course, his view of them was blocked by the tray, but it was as close to acceptance as he had up to that point. I'm just glad he didn't take them off in the car on the way to the sitters.

His hat and gloves are another story entirely. Like the Grinch hating Christmas, Ollie hates his hat and gloves. We keep them in the car because he runs from the sight of them. At least once he's strapped into his chair in the car, we have a captive child to finish dressing. It doesn't help much because he fights you all the way and takes them off as soon as you put them on. We are lucky to get him from the car to the sitters with everything still on. As soon as we get in the door, everything comes off.

He likes the wind in his face and watching the smoke from your breath. So far, he hasn't had to find out if he likes frostbite, but if he keeps this battle up, he just might.

January 17, 2005

Snot

With the cold temperatures, Ollie's teething and possible cold, he has had a lot of SNOT! We are constantly wiping his face to his cries of "no, no, no". All the while he shakes his head to get away from the dreaded Kleenex.

A recent development has become a new favorite snot-producing activity. He squishes up his nose and blows his snot out of his nose, then when it gets to his mouth, tastes it. It is always a race between snot speed and parental wiping to see who wins.

He also holds his nose by either pinching it with his fingers or the preferred method, shoving fingers up it. Then he either wipes the snot on something because it is gross (he doesn't like his hands to have stuff on them) or puts it on his food and eats it. We are so pleased to have taught him such fine etiquette.

We should have pictures back tomorrow, so I'll try to scan them in soon. In the meantime, just point your finger up your nose, laugh maniacally and you can give others the experience of Ollie.

No Sleep

Sleep was not Ollie's priority last night. His mama tried putting him in bed at 8, when he usually goes to bed. He wouldn't lay down, yelled like a howler monkey and threw a fit. So, he was let up for awhile. I got home from a little before 9 and he was laying on his mom's stomach. He didn't want to go to sleep. I took him so she could get a break and laid him on my shoulder. He kept grinding his teeth and playing with the pillow. He rolled around a bit on me, but wouldn't go to sleep.

I put him in bed at 9. He was exhausted, but still didn't want to sleep. He tried getting up, but I forced him to lay down and put the blankets on him. He started howling again as soon as I left the room. It only lasted 15 or 20 minutes before he settled down and went to sleep. This morning he woke up easily, but was still crabby. Hopefully he will get a decent nap today and be happy when he comes from the sitters tonight.

Make that 2

Two nights in a row that Ollie has woken up crying. We are guessing he is getting more molars. He usually settles down after a few minutes and goes back to sleep, but it is unusual for him to wake up. Apparently, he had a plastic ring in his mouth all day long yesterday at the sitters. It was all the way back in his mouth. He has been slobbering a lot more recently too. He has been pretty good about it all while he's awake. He plays, but occasionally gets crabby.

He'll finally get all his teeth in and then it'll be time for them to fall out! He won't let us look anymore and sticking your finger in his mouth to check is a painful idea. You're likely to come back with a nub!

In other Ollie news, he behaved himself for the most part at dinner last night. We got a quick bite at a fast food place before we ran errands. He likes chicken strips now, so he won't just have French Fries for dinner anymore. Nutritional pillars we are not. I also got to wear a French Fry on my butt after he wiped them all off the table. He also spit his lemonade out and drank our pop like last time. It must be because of the location, location, location. I'm hoping his table manners improve or his parents will be wearing his dinner more often!

Just Like Dad

Ollie isn't really with it this morning, just like his dad. He has been hard to wake up this past week and has seemed a bit out of it once he is up. That changes by the time I pick him up.

This morning for breakfast Ollie had a Hot Dog and chips while he ignored his Trix and spit his apple juice out. We are raising a health conscious child. Luckily he likes fruit and vegetables. Meat on the other hand isn't a favorite, but he loves Dot dogs as he calls them. I hope his diet changes as he gets older. We'll see.

I changed the how you make comments as you see below. If you want to leave a message to Ollie, you can do that after each post.

Parents Meet Henry (pronounced Ornery)

At dinner last night we met a new gentleman. Not very gentle, but it was definitely a new person. We went to eat at Chili's and were seated promptly. Then Henry was introduced.

He started out by grabbing the ketchup, opening the lid, squeezing and shaking the bottle. He then laughed maniacally as we tried to stop any ketchup from coming out. Next, he turned over the salt and pepper shakers while grabbing the sugar packets and trying to fling them every where. He then started going crawling across the table and drinking out of our cokes. Next he had a drink of his own milk, said 'YUCK' and spit it out on the table. He repeated this act several times. Next was the water. It didn't make it as far in his mouth as the milk had before it was spewed on the table. Every action was completed with the same maniacal laugh.

He was spanked and cried and taken outside to settle down. Outside he jumped on the waiting benches and laughed the same laugh. He was brought back in a little calmer and he was held until our dinner arrived by his momma. He scarfed almost everything in his reach. We thought that Henry had left us, but it was only temporarily. He dipped his food in the sauce and fed it to me several times. Of course I had to catch the sauce while it dripped off the food on the way to my mouth. Eventually the meal ended and he was ready to go, or so we thought.

We reached the car and tried to place Henry in his seat. He jumped out, grabbed the back of the front seat and laughed maniacally. He resisted all attempts to put him in his seat. He jumped out a second time before he was corralled into his seat. But the fun didn't stop there! While he was protesting the torture of being put in his seat he slapped his mom twice! Then the maniacal laugh returned. He was straight-jacketed into his seat and was calm for the ride home.

Once we were home, he was crabby for the rest of the night and even partially woke up to cry before we went to bed. He hasn't done that in ages, but fell back to sleep on his own without being picked up. He slept through the rest of the night.

This morning Ollie seemed to have returned and Henry has left us for now. I don't think this will be the last we see of him since he is nearing the terrible two's. We can't wait for his 3rd birthday.

X-Mas 2:The Return of Santa

Santa came again this weekend as Ollie's Grandparents and Aunt and Uncle came to town. Ollie probably doubled his present total to date.

The presents, limited to my memory, included:
1. Clothes
2. Little People Farm
3. Pulling caterpillar
4. Pulling toy with lights and spinning ball
5. Lego's
6. Sesame Street cars and carrier
7. Stackable cars
8. A Recliner (which the cats enjoy too)
9. His name scripted on a banner from Spain.
10. A few other things, that I've forgotten already.

He was when everyone first arrived, but was comfortable with them by the time they left. Weather shortened the trip, but they still made it up. The rest of the weekend Ollie played with his toys and wore a new set of clothes. We ran around town a bit on Sunday and he enjoyed the time out. The snow was turning into slush by then, so we didn't play in it. There is plenty of time for that later this winter. Besides, we still have to get Ollie to wear his hat and gloves for more then 10 seconds.

Memories

Ollie won't have many memories of this age in his life. He is learning so much that his brain doesn't have room for what he was crying about 5 minutes ago. He won't remember his bubble baths with bubbles on his head, cussing for the first time at the tender age of 19 months or his crash with the entertainment center. That is why this blog is here. Not only will he be able to know what happened to him, his parents will have a resource for when he asks a question about his development that we don't remember. It is also here to post pictures of things he may one day become embarrassed about.

Some day he'll ask why his forehead is shiny in the picture. We'll be able to tell him that the entertainment center had it out for him and got in his way while running underneath a blanket. Those entertainment centers are tricksy fellows if they have it out for you.

Inbox

On one or our trips home, I brought back my old toy box. It was in pretty bad shape, the paint was faded, the decals were torn and the wooden box was majorly dented. We repainted it red on the outside and blue on the inside. We made a lid for it and covered it with fabric so it could double as a bench for Ollie. We also added a few wooden animals that we got from a craft store and painted them multiple colors.

We then bought a cheap bag of toys at a garage sale. It consisted of blocks that can be put together. This combination has turned into a toy of its own.

He'll get in and flail around, get out and start it all over again. He'll also shut the lid and make his Mama and Dadda sit on it with him. Because sitting on a toy box together is so much fun! It is a close runner up to fake sleeping, I'm so glad I taught him that!

Jungle Gym

We moved the cat tower inside when we put plastic up on our sliding door. It has given them something else to play on and an escape from Ollie. It has turned into a play toy for Ollie.

Not only does he crawl through the top and bottom tubes, he plays hide and seek with the different tubes. We used to play a game where I would put my head in the bottom one, he would look through the middle one into the whole, grab at my face and laugh. Then he would get out and jump/fall on my chest, then he'd repeat. The bigger he gets the more I hope he won't jump on me. One day he'll knock the wind out of me. That'll be the last game of jump on dad's chest for fun.

Fashion

Fashion sense was at the forefront at the end of 2004. Ollie decided to take a few risks in his head wear. He still won't wear a hat and gloves outside when it is cold, but he will wear pants on his head inside.

For some unknown reason he started putting these on his head one night. He had trouble getting them on, so we had to assist. If you look close enough in the first picture, you will notice the sandals that must be worn with pajamas. They are highly fashionable and you can hardly tell he is wearing them until you get stomped in the chest. As you can also see this is when glue on the head was still fashionable. If only the entertainment center had moved this trend in fashion would have never occurred. Luckily Ollie is whole again and his fashion sense was only temporarily changed.

When We Left Off...

We were about to start our Christmas break. Ollie had a lot of time with his parents at home. His schedule got a bit out of wack. One day he didn't even nap, but went to bed early and slept through the night. He still went to bed before 10 each night and slept later to compensate, so we got to sleep in too. He had his moments, both good and bad.

Christmas started with a big meal on Christmas Eve. Christmas morning Ollie was ready for presents. He got everyone up at 8 am to open presents. We started sorting and as soon as the first present was out, he started ripping. We had to put them where he couldn't reach them so he could open them with everyone. He opened the paper and left most everything in the box. Once everything was out of the box, he went from one present to another and played with them. He ended up with quite a few presents.

He got:
1. A YMCA Elmo.
2. Toy Vacuum cleaner (very annoying - thanks to his Aunt).
3. A play center with various activities.
4. A leap frog drum (thanks to his uncle).
5. A Sit & Spin that plays music (thanks to his Aunt).
6. A ball that goes nuts when shaken (thanks to another Uncle).
7. A Dr. Suess book that has yet to read fully, like his other books.
8. A leap frog play table from his Grandpa Lanny.
9. A potty (a bit early, but he can get used to the idea).
10. A monkey flashlight from his sitter.

His Christmas haul isn't over yet. He has 2 more visits from his grandparents coming. My parents are coming this weekend and his Grandma Vicki (or Fifi as he pronounces it) is coming the 21st. He should be well stocked by then.

Ollie also turned into a mimic over the holidays. You say something, he repeats it! So, we were a bit surprised when he started saying "Oh F$!k" repeatedly. We had to substitute "oh Duck" to prevent him from cussing further. Now we catch ourselves and hope he doesn't hear it. This won't be easy.

The pictures from Christmas are still in the camera, so a picture of Ollie with his Ronda hat that he got for St. Nick's day will have to do for now.

Yes, the crazy faces have exploded as well over the holidays, this is one of the many new ones. The funniest is when he shoves 2 fingers up his nostrils, laughs and runs away from you, trying to breath. Apparently it is really funny to him. I'm sure he'll be subdued in the weeks to come with the extra people around, so they probably won't be seen much. Glad I have pictures to embarrass him with later in life.
