Snack

Ollie has insisted on getting his own snacks for a while now. He knows what he wants and he wants it now. Once he gets his desired snack, he changes his mind and gives it to you to eat. Last night, this caused 3 people to be eating ice cream at the same time, Ollie, Annie and me. I also got the pleasure of eating his yogurt after dinner. It definitely was a medley of food for dinner.

Snazzy Socks!

As you can see, he gets his snack by standing on the counter and picking them out. He isn't quite strong enough to open the fridge door, yet. Once he can do it, we are in trouble. If we are lucky, he will follow our missives to wait after dinner for a snack. No one is that lucky with a toddler.

Presents or Not

This was Ollie's haul at Easter. He had 2 chocolate bunnies gone by lunch. The rest of the candy met its demise later in the day. He was one sugar high boy that day.

He got plenty of toys, potato head family, legos, baby einstein movie and parental torture device. He used this in the afternoon on his aunt.

He was thrilled with it, she wasn't so much. Next year, we'll be doubling our pleasure/torture with all the toys. If you see us with blindfolds and earplugs, you'll know why.

Last night we bought Tori a bunch of clothes at a garage sale preview. We bought her clothes up to 2T of varying shapes and sizes. Some were never worn. It was a pretty good haul and we came home with a box full of laundry. I have another box full to get from my mom in May and more from her other grandma. We should be set in the clothing department for awhile. We only hope she doesn't have gastric reflux like Ollie so she can actually wear some of them.

Weekend

This past weekend was cold and wet, so we didn't go outside much at all. I'm sure Ollie would have preferred otherwise, but the weather conspired against him. He was good about being inside for most of the weekend, but that was probably because we did a bit of shopping and got out of the house.

Saturday we went to Target and the pet store. Ollie is fascinated with the birds in the pet store, so we always visit them when we go. They usually have cats from the animal shelter there as well. Ollie goes from cage to cage, trying to pet them and they generally want to be touched by him. It is just our cats that don't want any thing to do with him.

The funniest part of the weekend was while Ollie was telling his knock-knock jokes. As I mentioned before, he says "knock knock", we answer "who's there?" and he laughs. This time around was no different, except he asked different people at the same time. He said "Daddy, knock, knock". I answered, then he said "Mama, knock, knock" and she answered. Each time he laughed like it was the funniest thing in the world. Finally, he turned to Baby, one of our cats, and said "baby, knock, knock", she just stared at him like he was an idiot, of course as parents we laughed.

He didn't do too bad with going to bed the past couple of days. He cried a little bit Saturday night, but it didn't last long. Sunday night he was really tired. He took a later nap than usual, so I thought he'd be up late, but by 8:30, he was looking like this:

He laid around with us until about nine, but still said "no" to our inquisitions of his tiredness. About that time, he wasn't given a choice any longer and he gave his parents kisses and he laid down without a wimper. Hopefully, the trend will continue this week.

Keys

If you are missing your keys, the first place to look is in this boys direction.

His recent obsession is keys. He is specific on which keys he wants. He recognizes whose keys belong to whom. He'll ask for them by the name of the person to whom they belong. If he isn't using your keys to start his vehicle (by shoving them in the gear shift and bending the keys), they are probably in the seat of the vehicle. Keys are that important!

The key obsession has caused keys to be temporarily lost and he is no help in finding the keys he misplaces. So far this hasn't caused any keys to be replaced. He usually lays them in plain sight, unlike his monitor that we never found. We are guessing that ended up in the trash. Hopefully no keys end up with the same fate.

How to Frustrate Your Parents

Parents are easily frustrated by their children. I am no exception. One of the most frustrating things that Ollie does is say he wants something to eat. He'll ask for "nuiy bars" and we'll give them to him. He'll proceed to take a bite out of each and carry them around for awhile.

After playing with them for awhile and getting them all over everything, he will ask for another food to take a single bite of to repeat the process. Hence, you will see a lot of food with one bite out of it going in the trash in our house. You will also see an upset Ollie after we tell him 'no' to his next food item.

He has yet to master many skills, but he has mastered how to frustrate his parents easily.

Smash Eggs

This is how you are supposed to dye eggs.

Step 1: Get eggs

Step 2: Color Eggs
Step 3 is missing. It consists of throwing other eggs on top of your first egg and smashing them both. It also includes using your hands to retrieve the eggs once you are done with them. Then there is the mandatory destruction of clothes with food dye and knocking over of cups full of dye. The finish is running off to play while your parents clean up your mess and prepare your bath. Easter day consisted of making a mess out of candy, but that is another story.

Baby Sister

Pointing out his baby sister

He has no idea that she is coming or how it will change our family dynamic. He does know that Tori is something we talk about a lot. He says her name, but doesn't know it applies to the being in his momma's tummy. I'm just hoping he doesn't try and take her back to the hospital in his wagon like his momma did to her brother.

He Dislikes

Swings and the Zoo. Those used to be Ollie's favorites. He now dislikes both. The only thing he enjoyed at the zoo was the goat and llama eating food out of my hand. That was hysterical. The monkeys, sea lions, camels, meerkats (which he loved last time), lion, Rooster and every other animal in the park scared the crap out of him. The rooster flapped his wings, Ollie was scared, the camels walked by, Ollie was scared, the meerkats ran around, Ollie was scared. It was a good waste of $11 for his parents to enter, but Ollie was free. The most fun he had was when we ran into kids from his babysitters. The rest of the time Ollie was more interested in the people, than the animals. That is until they all scared him.

Swings were no exception to scaring the crap out of Ollie. He used to only want to be in the swings. Now, we couldn't get him out fast enough. He wanted to try different swings, but we ended up with him wanting out each time. He did swing slowly for a little while. He also was watching another kid swing, so he was distracted from his own swinging. Pictures, slides/parks, swings and zoo's. All things not to do with Ollie. Maybe in a year or two he'll want to do this stuff again, but for now it is off limits.

Caught a Thief

This morning while emptying the laundry, I found a yellow plastic ring with a bit of rubber with yellow hearts on it. It was one of those rings that link together with other rings to make long chains. We have a bunch of these in Ollie's toy box, but this wasn't like our rings.

Ollie wore his Tigger overalls to the sitter's yesterday. They have a lot of pockets and Ollie likes to put things in his pockets. He must've put it in is pocket, forgot about it and it came out in the wash. I gave it back to him to give to the sitter this morning and he didn't even fake being interested in his stolen booty.

He dropped it on the floor when we got to the sitters as the other kids pointed at the robot on his shirt. He wasn't really with it this morning, so he just stood there and stared off into space while being poked in the robot. I guess they couldn't get the robot to start. At least it didn't turn into another wrestling match.

Keying Elmo

We bought a red fire engine that Ollie can ride on around the house. It was a great deal at 50 cents at the garage sale. It even had it's own set of plastic keys permanently attached to the vehicle. This was not good enough for Ollie. He now takes our keys (his favorites change often) and uses them to 'start' his fire engine. If he doesn't get his current favorite, he'll howl "keys, keys, keys", until he gets the right ones. He then inserts them into the shifter on his fire engine and is off on his journey. He also takes the keys with him when he is done riding and carries them around with him. So far he has just misplaced them. They haven't just disappeared forever like his monitor.

This morning Ollie took his Elmo blanket to the sitters. This was something new. If he messes with his blankets at all, it is just in his room to pretend sleep. Sometimes he will bring them out of his room and run around with them. This morning he had to have his Elmo blanket with him at all times. He constantly asked for it by name. When I tried to leave it in the car this morning, he started crying for the blanket. It was the saddest puppy dog face you've ever seen. So, this morning Ollie is playing guard the Elmo blanket from the Elmo fanatics at the sitters. I was told there is 1 who is all about Elmo. I think Ollie can take her! This may cause the first fight between the kids there. Hopefully there won't be many bumps and bruises.

Lastly, Ollie has started forming his own sentences. Up until this point he has been mimicking us. Now he has started making his own sentences like "I see bus", "I see Piper" and "I see Police". He sees a lot of things and no he doesn't see police peering in the drivers side window. He also is learning the difference between vehicles, planes, trucks, mail trucks, police, bicycle (for motorcylces too), busses and cars. Every time he sees something different he shouts out its name. This game also helps calm him when he is crying for no reason. "Can you find a bus?", we say and he looks for a bus. The watershed of tears subside long enough for him to forget what he's crying about as he tries to find a bus. Someday, we won't be able to distract him so easily, but we are enjoying it for now.

Busy Weekend

We painted our room this weekend and Ollie lent us a helping hand. It was more like a helping arm, shirt and fingers. While priming the room, he swiped the primer off the wall with his fingers and then complained that he wanted it off by whining and holding up his hand. At some point he leaned up against the with his arm and shirt. His forearm was covered in green paint, but that didn't seem to bother him. He also got the primer on his shirt somehow, but we have no idea how.

He also played outside this weekend. While watering the plants, he decided to help by grabbing the hose and dousing himself. He was stripped to his diaper so he could play in the water and not get too cold. We tried to use the sprinkler and let Ollie play in it, but it wasn't as much fun for him as the hose by itself. He would splash himself and fling the hose around then repeat. The water was cold, so he wasn't in it long.

He also played in the sand, on his 'cars' and helped us rake up the remaining leaves. He would run into the leaf pile, then back out. No jumping in them, but he seemed to enjoy running in and out. He also took long naps and slept through the night, so it appears his teeth problems are over for now. He just won't let us verify.

H

H is the shape the 3 of us make when we sleep in our bed together. I know this because we've made an H the last 2 nights because of Ollies teeth. His teeth have woken him up the last couple of nights between 2 and 3, then he has come to sleep with us. He falls back to sleep easily, us, not so much. We are getting a small reminder of what a newborn is like, but newborns wake more and don't force you to the edge of your bed.

I'm hoping he doesn't get used to sleeping in our bed with us. It'll be a bear to break him of that habit. The good part of it is that he is getting used to sleeping in a regular bed, but he turns himself around while sleeping. That may take a bit of work, but he'll get there eventually. We then get to start the cycle all over with Tori. If we are lucky, she won't have gastric and will sleep through the night before 9 months. Then we can transition Ollie to a regular bed, potty train him and send him out into the real world for a job. I guess we can wait until his adult teeth come in before he has to get a job.

Revenge of The Teeth

Molar 1 is through on the bottom, molar 2 was on its way out before Ollie's bedtime last night. We prepared thoroughly, we gave him medicine and hoped for the best. The best didn't come, but a tooth did.

He awoke around 1:30 with a holler and a wail. We tried calming him with the usual tactics, but the dice kept coming up craps. We put him in bed with us for a few minutes and he calmed down. In my fuzzy state of alertness, I couldn't add 8 + 6 to get 2 am (8 pm and 6 hrs wait for another dose), so I said he couldn't have medicine. After being corrected, it processed correctly through the haze in my brain and Ollie received more pain medicine. He went back to bed with a holler and a wail, but settled down for a long winters nap, or so we thought.

An hour later, he awoke with a shriek. Calming techniques and our bed did nothing this time around, so back to his own bed he went. The hollering, wailing and shrieking of 1000 toddlers not wanting to go to bed ensued. He woke up others in the house and ensured his parents were bright and cheery in the morning. Sleep ensued for him in about 10 minutes for the rest of the night. His parents watched the clock pass the time, we could've followed his lead and yelled ourselves to sleep. That wouldn't have gone well with everyone in the house and probably would've started Ollie's cycle all over again. I fell asleep at some point, but I think Tori kept her Mama up much longer.

No Picture, Picture

We had everything setup for Ollie to get his 2 year picture taken at a new photography studio that opened. He had his hair cut on Saturday and didn't look much like a peacock anymore, so he was ready to go. Before we got there, we started with the wardrobe issue. Would it be Tigger or Mickey on his shirt. After much debate Ollie chose Mickey. Ollie 'told' us that he wanted to wear the Mickey clothes by getting extremely excited when we showed it to him. He also had a fit when we tried to get the Tigger clothes on him, so it was easy to tell what he wanted.

We got to the studio 20 minutes early and it took Ollie about 20 minutes to warm up to playing with the lego's. We have lego's at home, so he was definitely feeling scared/shy with being there. It came time for Ollie's picture to be taken, or so we thought. They pulled the back screen down for him, but he wasn't budging out of our arms. We could get him to touch his feet to the ground while we were holding him, but that was as far as he would go.

We moved him to the background where they would take the pictures and tried to get him detached from us enough for them to take a picture. It happened, but not long enough for them to get a picture. He stood there with stuffed dogs at his feet, but with his head down. His mama cleared out of the way, but I was within walking distance for him and he made a beeline for me. We then tried to sit him on my lap for head shots. Apparently, there was velcro between my body and his head, because it was difficult to get his head off my chest for a picture. After 20 minutes of trying to get him to situp and smile, we gave up. We went home empty handed after they were only able to get a few attempted photos. Ollie's velcro wasn't wearing off any time soon, so it looks like we won't be getting a 2 year picture of Ollie. Snapshots will have to do for the time being.
